My wife (49) collapsed in our bedroom last weekend and but for my 16 yr old daughter, who had learned CPR during transition yr in 2008, who brought her back and the ambulance crew who arrived in c 10 minutes she was gone. She is now in James' awaiting an ICD(?) and thankfully should be ok following same.
Dont know why I'm actually doing this - maybe because I'm still a bit in shock, noy sure but the Cormac forum seemed a good place to put it out and see what comes back.
Natuarally we are all so proud of what my eldest daughter did (and the youngest was on the phone to 999 at the same time) and all the medics since believe she bought her mother the time necessary to survive what now seems to have been a cardiac arrest (without any warning, chest pain etc etc)

CPJ

I lost my husband last year to hcm and also have 2 sons being screened for this condition, iam also very frustrated with way we are treated. Its easy for them to say everythings ok for now and to come back in 18 months but we have to live everyday with the fear of what might happen. My sons were both into alot of sports my eldest was last years u.12 dublin 200m champion for the all irelands and they have both been told not to do competetive sports which is terribly hard on them.On monday my son was brought home from school with chest pains i rushed him to gp who contacted crumlin for an emergency appointment, last night i was told they will see him on the 3rd November, amonth away?!what am i supposed to do till then.I sympathise with you totally because i understand your fear and i hope you finally get the help and support we all deserve.

Hi, I am a member of a GAA club in Tyrone who are discussing Heart Screening for our youth teams at present. I am the club physio and feel it is essential that we do this especially as we have had three incidents in the last 12 months were 3 of our players collapsed either while playing or directly afterwards. One of these players are still being investigated while the other two have had the all clear, thankfully. However, a few members of our club committee have been informed that any positive findings in the heart screening process will affect the ability of the child in later life to obtain a life assurance for a mortgage. This 'rumour' has prevented the club in the past from screening our young players. Can anyone confirm if screening can affect life assurance in later life? I do not personally think this should stop us screening our players but this unfortunately seems to be the position of the club at present. i would be grateful to hear from anyone with any other information regarding screening and this particular point.

 Hi,
Our son Mark Heffernan died in his sleep on jan 21st this year (23yrs). We now believe it was SADS. I discovered 'heart house' by chance on the internet. If you have had an immediate family member 40 yrs or younger who has died as a result of SADS you and your family are entitled to a full screening f.o.c. Myself and my sister Liz are 'walking' in the flora mini marathon on the June weekend for THE Mater FOUNDATION.

I just wanted to post a note about the specialised SCD nurse now placed at the Royal Victoria Hospital. Her name is Tracy Jardine and I was wondering if anyone knew how I get in contact with her? do I need a referral from my own GP? and what department would she be in? I really really need to talk with her.

My son is at risk of SCD, he's just 8 & takes part in various competitive sports - his blood auntie died last March of SCD, just 24 & leaving 2 little children behind. We've all been so devastated, she had no prior symptoms - a bolt out of the blue & so far I've not been at all satisfied with the care we've gotten. Our GP admitted that I knew more about the condition than she did. He had the Echo & ECG but I've been told that the ECG needs to be read by the consultant rather than a computer?

I've been trying to get answers for over a year now & to be honest everyday I fear for my son. It's doing my head in. I've scoured all the sites on the internet concerning SCD, This website has been the best so far, by miles. So informative, yet, easy to understand...Big thanks to the Cormac Trust.

I have another appointment for Jack to see his doctor next wednesday 14th June so I'd be eternally grateful for any info before then so if anyone can help me, please email me at siouxi@hotmail.co.uk

(even if it's after that date please still email me...many many thanks) x

 Hello

Just to say that myself and Therese both have these devices implanted now nearly a year. Everything is going well and we are both extremely happy that we have been lucky enough to be discovered before anything disastrous happened to either of us.

After the tragic incidents that has lead to the death of two young boys this week in Northern Ireland, i feel that I need to congratulate Bridget McAnallen for all her hard work.

I am contemplating how I am going to start off my campaign of awareness, I don't believe that enough people know about SADS, and I feel as a sufferer of LQT that it will help peoples understanding.

anyway. I hope everyone in the McAnallen family are well.

Grace x

The response of the public to the fund-raising efforts by The Cormac Trust and everyone involved in it, has been incredible and is talked about all over Northern Ireland. It is well recognised that the provision of lots of AEDs and training in their use is essential for there to be any improvement in rates of survival from sudden out-of-hospital cardiac arrest - especially in remote rural areas. Equally important and indeed written into the Resuscitation Council Guidelines, is the 'shout for help / call 999' actions. NIAS is keen to support the community and is very interested in First Responder groups and Public Access Defibrillator schemes. It is crucial that on seeing someone in a collapsed state either at home or in a public place, an early call for help is made. Information regarding the close location of an AED and the identification of someone who is trained in its use or who will use it, is 'complemental' or 'supplemental' to the arrival of advanced medical assistance. The simple fact is that education and communication is possibly as important as the provision of the equipment. NIAS needs to be able to communicate with people who can help.

Congratulations on getting the Cormac McAnallen Trust Forum up and running.

Cormac Mac Nailín was a true sporting legend from county Tir Eoghan, winning just about every 'Peil Ghaelach' accolade imaginable.

Cormac captained Tyrone to an All-Ireland Minor Football victory in 1998. Two years later in 2000 he won a Sigerson Cup title with Queen's University and later he won an All-Ireland Under 21 title with Tyrone.

In 2001, Cormac was named "Young Footballer of the Year", before joining the senior Tyrone panel. He was a key member of the Tyrone team that won the National Football League and the Football Championship in 2003 for the first time in the county's century-long history of partipating in Gaelic Games. Coram also played on Ireland's International Rules team in October 2003. This led to him receiving his first All Star award in 2003.

Tragically, Cormac McAnallen died suddenly on March 2, 2004 from a rare viral infection of the heart. His untimely death deeply affected the Tyrone team and the world of Gaelic Games as a whole, and myself. Just over a week before his death, Cormac captained the Tyrone side that won the Dr. McKenna Cup after an overwhelming victory over Donegal at Ballybofey.

In 2004 the "Cormac McAnallen Cup", the cup that Ireland and Australia play for in the International Rules series, was named in his honour. In January 2005, the Cormac McAnallens GAC was also founded in Sydney, Australia.

In 2005, when Tyrone won their 2nd All Ireland football championship, Brian Dooher, the captain of Tyrone, dedicated the victory in Cormac's name in his acceptance speech up in the Hogan Stand. Dooher said that Cormac should have been standing here instead of me and went on to say, as a tearful team manager Mickey Harte had previously done only minutes before, that Cormac immediately stated after he had been appointed captain that he had not wished the success achieved in 2003 to be his last with the county. The tens of thousands of Tyrone fans that where on the pitch after Tyrone won the match then began to chant Cormac's name on what was an intensely emotional day for all those involved in Gaelic Games in Tyrone.

May Cormac's memory last forever! Such an amazing player, sadly taken at tender age at the height of his prime in football prowess.

You will be sadly missed Cormac, may your spirit linger on!

Murrough Ó Catháin.

Also see:

http://www.thecormactrust.com

http://www.campachormaic.com

http://www.clubtyrone.com

http://tyrone.gaa.ie

http://guestbook.sparklit.com/entries?gbaction=viewResponses&gbID=106048 (Scroll down below the first four boxes on this page, to see the entries)

 Hi,

First of all I am glad to see that people are taking notice of the conditions which can cause SCD. It good to see people actually care about what happens. Im sorry for your loss, but hopefully you are helping prevent others from the same with your campaign.

Im from Limavady, Co.Derry. Last summer my sister was rushed to hospital with serious cardiac problems due to a sudden shock in her surroundings which woke her from her sleep. She only survived because she had been having small syptoms of heart problems before this occasion, she had read up on what she needed to do. She quickly acted on trying to relax and phoned for an ambulance immediately. If she hadn't of calm herself down, she would definitely not be with us today. After this incident, my entire family got screened for any trace of a heart defect.

My mother, my sister and myself where all diagnosed with Long QT syndrome last July. Its a daunting thought that we have such a serious condition, but at least I am here and can try my best to prevent any situations which can lead to my sudden death. As most are far too late to ever know they had a heart condition.

I have been diagnosed with type two, which means any sudden noises, stress or extreme emotion could lead to an irregular arythmia. Im not even mean to have alarm clocks anymore!! Personally I have tried not to let it ruin my life, as I have read stories about people who let it take over their life and barely leave the house. I count my blessings that Im still here, and that my family are too. But life is about living, not being scared of living incase life is taken from you.

I just wanted to leave a little message to say that some people do have hope and do get discovered early enough it helps prevent any unfortunate sudden deaths. So keep campaigning, its definitely not a lost cause.

Thanks for giving me some hope, and reminding me Im not the only one to have to go through this.

If you would like to contact me my email address is
rgmcginnis@hotmail.com

Thanks if you took the time to read my story. I wish you all the luck in the world with your quest to save others from this misfortune.

Grace McGinnis
